Off-ramp

An off-ramp is the exit from crypto back into the banking system. It is the mirror image of an on-ramp: you send tokens, the provider sells them, and money arrives in a bank account.
How an off-ramp works
- You send tokens. From a custodial balance or from your own wallet, on a network the provider supports.
- The provider sells them. It quotes a rate and, under MiCA Article 77, must execute at the price shown when your order becomes final.
- Money is paid out. In euro usually by SEPA to an IBAN, in dollars by ACH or wire.
Under the EU payment services directive, a standard euro transfer has to reach the recipient's bank by the end of the next business day. SEPA Instant makes funds available within ten seconds, around the clock, where both banks support it.
If the tokens come from a self-hosted wallet, the provider collects information on the sender. For amounts above EUR 1,000 it must also assess whether the wallet belongs to you.
Example
At xChange.bg, a technology provider whose accounts and conversions come from the regulated partner Bridge (a Stripe company), the off-ramp fee is 1.25% with a minimum of EUR 2, and the money can go to any bank account (see pricing).
The bullets use an illustrative rate of 0.86 EUR per USDC.
- You sell 4,000 USDC to your euro account at a Bulgarian bank. The fee is 50 USDC, and the remaining 3,950 USDC is paid out as EUR 3,397.00.
- You sell 100 USDC. 1.25% would be 1.25 USDC, about EUR 1.08, so the EUR 2 minimum applies, about 2.33 USDC. The remaining 97.67 USDC is paid out as EUR 84.00.
Before sending, run the destination IBAN through the IBAN checker. A typo in an IBAN usually fails the check digit test, while a valid IBAN of the wrong person does not.
Tax in Bulgaria
This section is general information and not tax advice. Under Article 33(3) of the Personal Income Tax Act (ЗДДФЛ), the taxable result from selling or exchanging crypto-assets is the year's gains minus the year's losses, reduced by 10% statutory expenses. The tax rate is 10%, you declare the result in Annex 5 of the annual return by 30 April of the following year, and the National Revenue Agency says no advance tax is due on this income.
A dollar stablecoin can create a gain or loss in euro terms even when it holds its dollar peg. If you bought 1,000 USDC for EUR 900 and later sell them for EUR 870, you have a EUR 30 loss for that sale. Selling EURC bought at par usually gives a result close to zero.
Common confusion
- Sending USDC to your own wallet is not an off-ramp. Only the sale for money is.
- "Instant" payout depends on both banks. The provider can send an instant transfer only if the receiving bank accepts it.
- The issuer's free redemption does not make every off-ramp free. Intermediaries charge for their service.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an off-ramp payout take?
- It depends on the provider and the payment rail. Under EU payment rules a standard euro credit transfer must reach the recipient's bank by the end of the next business day, and a SEPA instant transfer completes within ten seconds.
Can I off-ramp to any bank account?
- Many providers pay out to any bank account, while some only allow accounts in your own name. Payments in euro usually go by SEPA to an IBAN, and payments in dollars by ACH or wire.
Is selling stablecoins for euros taxable in Bulgaria?
- Selling crypto-assets, stablecoins included, is a sale under Article 33(3) of the Personal Income Tax Act. Gains and losses for the year are netted, reduced by 10% statutory expenses and taxed at 10%. You declare them in Annex 5 of the annual return.
Why did the provider ask where my crypto came from?
- When a provider receives crypto-assets from a self-hosted wallet, EU transfer rules require it to record sender details. Above EUR 1,000 it must assess whether the wallet belongs to you, which can mean extra questions or a proof of ownership.
What is the difference between an off-ramp fee and a redemption fee?
- The issuer of an e-money token must redeem it at par without a fee under MiCA. An off-ramp is a separate service offered by an intermediary, which sets its own price for selling your tokens and paying out.
