Coinbase is a large crypto platform with a MiCA licence from Luxembourg and, by its own count, tens of thousands of clients in Bulgaria. xChange.bg is a smaller Sofia company built around account details in your own name that turn money into stablecoins. They overlap on one job, moving between euro and USDC, and differ on almost everything around it. Facts below were checked on 16 September 2026. For a full profile, read our Coinbase review.

Who each service is for

Coinbase is a US-listed group that serves the EEA through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. for crypto-asset services and Coinbase Ireland Limited for e-money. In its notification to the Bulgarian FSC, Coinbase said its EU entities had about 43,000 clients in Bulgaria. It suits people who want a large, directly licensed platform to buy, hold and sell crypto-assets inside an app, and who are comfortable with custody by the platform and English-language support.

xChange.bg is run by Global Xchange JSC in Sofia, the team behind a Bulgarian crypto exchange since 2017, relaunched in 2026. It gives a EUR IBAN and USD account details in your own name. Money that arrives becomes USDC in a self-custody wallet, and money that leaves goes to any bank account, yours or someone else's. It suits freelancers, businesses and individuals who get paid by bank transfer, want to hold stablecoins themselves and prefer support in Bulgarian.

The differences that matter

Licence. Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. holds a MiCA authorisation from Luxembourg's CSSF, dated 20 June 2025 in ESMA's register, and is passported to Bulgaria. Its services include custody, exchange and transfers. xChange.bg is a technology provider: accounts and conversions come from the regulated partner Bridge, a Stripe company.

Bank details in your name. This is the clearest practical difference. Coinbase's EMEA funding page asks you to send SEPA transfers to Coinbase's banking details and to put only your Coinbase reference code in the reference field. Deposits must come from an account in your own name, and the page says business, pooled or shared accounts are not accepted. xChange.bg gives you an IBAN in your own name, so a client or employer can pay you directly. See the EUR account page for how it works.

Who you can pay. Coinbase requires the name on a payment method to match your Coinbase account, so bank payouts go to you. xChange.bg can pay out to a recipient's bank account at 1.25%, and transfers between xChange.bg clients are free.

Custody. Coinbase holds your crypto-assets as custodian under its MiCA authorisation. xChange.bg puts USDC in a self-custody wallet: you hold the keys, and xChange.bg cannot freeze your balance. Self-custody also means you are responsible for access to your account.

Stablecoins. Both work with USDC. Coinbase also supports EURC, and names both in section 5.15 of its EEA user agreement. Decrypt reported that Coinbase restricted USDT and other stablecoins that do not meet MiCA for European users from 13 December 2024.

Support and language. Coinbase has no Bulgarian website: coinbase.com/bg returned a 404 page when we checked. Its support page lists chat with a virtual assistant first, phone callback and email during business hours, without a list of languages, and its EEA user agreement says the English version prevails. xChange.bg supports customers in Bulgarian and English from an office at 66 Vitosha Blvd, Sofia.

Card. Coinbase's EEA user agreement allows for a Coinbase Visa Debit Card as an additional service, but availability in Bulgaria is not published. The xChange.bg Visa card is coming soon.

Where Coinbase is stronger

  • Scale and track record in Bulgaria. About 43,000 Bulgarian clients, by Coinbase's own figure to the FSC.
  • A CSSF licence. Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. is authorised under MiCA by Luxembourg's regulator and passported to Bulgaria.
  • Free SEPA in and out. The EMEA funding page says SEPA transfers in EUR have no fees.
  • More than stablecoins. Its authorisation covers exchanging one crypto-asset for another, so you can trade assets that xChange.bg does not handle.
  • Trustpilot score. 4.0 from 23,144 reviews on 16 September 2026, on a global profile.

Coinbase also has a regulatory record to weigh. On 6 November 2025 the Central Bank of Ireland fined Coinbase Europe Limited EUR 21,464,734 for failures in monitoring transactions between April 2021 and March 2025. That entity's crypto services have since moved to Coinbase Luxembourg.

Cost example

A like-for-like EUR example needs published fees on both sides. Coinbase publishes that SEPA deposits and withdrawals in EUR are free, but it does not publish a fixed fee or spread for buying or selling USDC in the EEA; both appear on the order preview. So we can only show the xChange.bg side with certainty:

Step xChange.bg Coinbase
EUR 1,000 arrives by SEPA Free to receive Free
Converted to USDC EUR 15 (1.5%) Shown at order preview
1,000 USDC paid out to a bank 12.50 (1.25%) Sell fee at preview, SEPA withdrawal free

Before you choose, open a Coinbase order preview for the same amount and compare the total with the stablecoin fee calculator.

How to move from Coinbase to xChange.bg

  1. Open an xChange.bg account online and complete identity verification. You get a EUR IBAN, USD account details and a self-custody wallet.
  2. Pick the network. The xChange.bg wallet runs on Solana, Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon and Optimism. Check which of these Coinbase offers for sending your USDC.
  3. Copy your wallet address for that network and check it with the crypto address checker.
  4. Send a small test amount from Coinbase, confirm it arrived, then send the rest. On the xChange.bg side, on-chain transfers cost the network fee only.
  5. Redirect incoming payments. Give clients or your employer your new IBAN so future euro land as stablecoins directly.
  6. Keep your Coinbase history. Download statements for your records and your tax return.

If you hold other crypto-assets on Coinbase, decide separately where to keep them, since xChange.bg is built around USDC.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coinbase licensed in Bulgaria?

Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. is authorised under MiCA by Luxembourg's CSSF and appears in ESMA's register with Bulgaria among its host countries. It is also on the FSC list of Article 65 notifications. Bulgarian users moved to the Coinbase Luxembourg user agreement on 13 October 2025.

Does Coinbase give me an IBAN in my own name?

We found no evidence of one. Coinbase's EMEA funding page tells you to send SEPA transfers to Coinbase banking details and to enter only your Coinbase reference code in the reference field. xChange.bg issues a EUR IBAN and USD account details in your own name.

How much does Coinbase charge to buy USDC with euro?

Coinbase does not publish a fixed rate for EEA simple buys. Its fee page says the quoted price includes a spread and that a Coinbase fee is shown on the order preview, varying by payment method, size, asset and jurisdiction. SEPA deposits in EUR are free.

Can I pay a supplier from Coinbase by bank transfer?

Not directly to a third party. Coinbase requires the name on your payment method to match the name on your Coinbase account, so bank withdrawals go to your own account. With xChange.bg you can pay out to someone else's bank account at 1.25%.

Why was Coinbase fined in Ireland?

The Central Bank of Ireland fined Coinbase Europe Limited EUR 21,464,734 on 6 November 2025 for breaches in monitoring transactions for money laundering and terrorist financing between April 2021 and March 2025. The regulator said over 30 million transactions were not properly monitored.

Can I move USDC from Coinbase to xChange.bg?

Yes. Copy your xChange.bg wallet address for a network that Coinbase also supports for USDC, send a small test amount, then the rest. xChange.bg charges nothing to receive on-chain beyond the network fee, and you keep the keys.

Does Coinbase offer support in Bulgarian?

We found no evidence of it. Coinbase has no Bulgarian website, its support page lists no languages, and the EEA user agreement says the English version prevails. xChange.bg offers support in Bulgarian and English from an office in Sofia.
