Sending money abroad with stablecoins: a practical guide for 2026

A SWIFT wire moves money through a chain of banks, on banking days, with fees that are often only clear once the money arrives. A stablecoin transfer moves a token that represents dollars or euro directly from one wallet to another on a public blockchain, at any hour. The second route is not automatically cheaper or better, but for many payments outside the euro area it is worth comparing. This guide walks through the steps, the costs, network choice, address checks and the part people forget: how the recipient gets local money.

How does sending money with stablecoins work?

The route has three legs:

  1. On-ramp. You convert euro or dollars into a stablecoin, usually USDC for dollars or EURC for euro, through an exchange or an account that converts incoming money.
  2. On-chain transfer. You send the tokens from your wallet to the recipient's wallet address on a chosen blockchain network. You pay a network fee.
  3. Off-ramp. The recipient keeps the stablecoins or converts them into local currency through an off-ramp provider and withdraws to a bank account.

A SWIFT wire, by comparison, goes from your bank through one or more correspondent banks to the recipient's bank, with possible currency conversion at your bank, at an intermediary or at the receiving bank.

Stablecoins vs SWIFT: what costs should you compare?

To compare fairly, take a real amount and write down what the recipient ends up with in their currency under each route. When is SEPA the better choice?

If you send euro to a bank account in the SEPA area, a normal SEPA transfer is usually the simplest option. According to the ECB, SEPA lets customers make cashless euro payments anywhere in the EU and in a number of non-EU countries, just like within their own country. Stablecoins make more sense when the recipient is outside SEPA, needs dollars, is paid by many small transfers, or already uses a crypto wallet.

A worked example with published fees

Suppose you hold euro and want to pay a contractor EUR 1,000 in USDC through xChange.bg, whose accounts and conversions are provided by regulated partner Bridge (a Stripe company). The example uses an illustrative rate of 0.86 EUR per USDC and assumes it does not change between the two conversions:

  1. You send EUR 1,000 to your EUR account. The on-ramp fee is 1.5%, so EUR 15, and the remaining EUR 985 arrives in your wallet as about 1,145.35 USDC.
  2. If the contractor is also an xChange.bg client, the transfer between clients is free and instant. If not, you send on-chain and pay the network fee.
  3. If the contractor, as an xChange.bg client, pays out the 1,145.35 USDC to a euro bank account, the off-ramp fee is 1.25%, or 14.32 USDC, and about EUR 972.69 reaches the bank.

The total cost is about EUR 27.31 on EUR 1,000 (EUR 1,000 minus EUR 972.69), or 2.7%, before any network fee. In practice the EUR/USD rate moves between the two conversions, so the final euro amount can be higher or lower. For a payment inside SEPA, a bank transfer may well cost less. For a dollar payment to a country outside SEPA, compare this figure with your bank's full wire cost and exchange rate.

How do you send stablecoins abroad step by step?

  1. Agree on token and network with the recipient. Ask which stablecoin they accept and on which network their wallet or exchange receives it.
  2. Get the address in writing. Ask the recipient to copy it from their wallet or exchange deposit page, not to type it.
  3. Check the address. Paste it into the crypto address checker to catch format errors, and compare the first and last characters with the recipient over a second channel.
  4. Buy or top up the stablecoin. Make sure you also have what you need for the network fee.
  5. Send a small test amount. Wait until the recipient confirms it arrived.
  6. Send the rest. Save the transaction ID (hash) and share it with the recipient.
  7. Keep records. Note the date, amount, network, fee and the EUR value for your own accounting.

How do you choose the right network?

USDC runs natively on many networks. Circle lists, among others, Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, OP Mainnet and Stellar. EURC is available on fewer: Circle lists Avalanche, Base, Ethereum, Solana and Stellar.

What to weigh:

  • Support on both sides. This is the deciding factor. A cheap network that the recipient's exchange does not accept is the wrong network.
  • Fees. On Ethereum, fees are paid in ether (ETH) and rise when the network is busy. On Solana, every transaction pays a fee in SOL, with a base fee per signature and an optional priority fee. Ethereum.org presents layer 2 networks, such as Base and Arbitrum, as a way to send money with low fees while relying on Ethereum's security.
  • The fee token. Check that you hold the token needed to pay the gas fee, unless your wallet covers it.
  • Recipient's off-ramp. If the recipient will sell for local money, choose the network their off-ramp accepts for deposits.

If you are unsure, ask the recipient for a screenshot of their deposit page that shows both the token and the network. It takes a minute and removes the most common and most expensive mistake.

How do you check a wallet address before sending?

Address formats differ by network family:

  • Ethereum and networks built like it (Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism) use addresses of 42 characters: "0x" followed by 40 hexadecimal characters, according to ethereum.org. The same address format works on all of them, but the tokens exist separately on each network.
  • Solana uses a different format that does not start with "0x".

A format check catches typos and wrong-family addresses. It cannot tell you whether the address belongs to the right person. Guard against address replacement malware and look-alike addresses: compare several characters at the start and end, and use a test transfer.

What if the transfer does not arrive?

  1. Look up the transaction in a block explorer using its ID (hash). If it is confirmed, the tokens are at the receiving address.
  2. Compare the network. If you sent on a network other than the one the recipient's exchange accepts, the deposit may not be credited automatically. The recipient should contact their provider's support with the hash, network and amount.
  3. Check the address character by character against the recipient's written message.
  4. Do not send again until you know what happened to the first transfer.

How does the recipient cash out?

This is where many transfers get stuck. Before you send, the recipient should confirm:

  1. An off-ramp in their country that accepts the stablecoin and network you plan to use.
  2. Verified account. Most providers require identity checks before they pay out to a bank.
  3. Fees and rate. The spread or fee to sell, and the withdrawal fee to their bank.
  4. Limits. Daily or monthly payout limits for new accounts.
  5. Whose bank account. Payouts usually go only to an account in the recipient's own name.

Frequently asked questions

Is sending money with stablecoins cheaper than SWIFT?

It can be, especially for dollar payments outside the SEPA area, but not by default. Add the fee to buy the stablecoin, the network fee and the recipient's fee to cash out, then compare with the wire's sending, intermediary and receiving fees plus the exchange rate markup.

Should I use stablecoins to send euro within Europe?

Usually a SEPA transfer is simpler. SEPA lets you make euro payments across the EU and several non-EU countries like domestic ones. Stablecoins make more sense when the recipient is outside SEPA, needs dollars, or already uses a crypto wallet.

How long does a stablecoin transfer take?

The on-chain transfer itself is usually confirmed within seconds to minutes, at any hour, depending on the network. The slower parts are often buying the stablecoin and the recipient's conversion to local money, which depend on the providers and banks involved.

Which network is best for sending USDC?

The best network is one that both your wallet and the recipient's wallet or exchange support. Among them, compare the fee and speed. Sending on a network the recipient does not support can make the funds hard or impossible to recover.

What happens if I send USDC to the wrong address?

A blockchain transfer cannot be reversed by a bank or by the sender. If the address belongs to someone else, you depend on their goodwill. Check the address and network before sending, and use a small test transfer first.

How does the recipient turn USDC into local money?

The recipient needs an off-ramp: an exchange or payment provider in their country that accepts USDC on the network you used, verifies their identity and pays out to a local bank account. Fees and limits differ, so the recipient should check before you send.

Does sending stablecoins abroad have tax consequences in Bulgaria?
