Nexo review 2026: availability in Bulgaria, licence, fees and custody

Compare side by side

Reuters describes Nexo as a crypto lender co-founded by a former Bulgarian lawmaker (source 8), which is why "Nexo review" and "Nexo мнения" are common searches in Bulgaria. This review sets out what Nexo's own documents, regulators and Reuters say, checked on 16 September 2026. It does not score the service. The single most practical fact for readers in Bulgaria comes first: Nexo's current EEA terms do not accept Bulgarian residents.

Availability in Bulgaria

Nexo's Terms of Service for the EEA were last updated on 16 June 2026. To onboard, a client must be resident in Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Switzerland, Vatican City, New Zealand or the EEA, excluding Bulgaria, and a further clause lists Bulgaria among excluded residencies (source 1, clauses IV.1.3 and IV.1.4). We found no separate Nexo terms for Bulgaria. The terms do not give a reason.

Company and ownership

Reuters describes Nexo AG as a Swiss unit of Cayman Islands-based Nexo Capital, and Nexo as founded in 2018 (source 8). The EEA terms are an agreement with any holding company, subsidiary or entity of the Nexo group and are governed by the substantive law of the Cayman Islands, without naming a single contracting company (source 1, Section XVIII). The Nexo Card is provided by DiPocket UAB, authorised by the Bank of Lithuania, for Nexo Services Sp. z o.o. in Poland (source 6). The claimants in the ICSID case described below are Nexo AG and two Bulgarian companies, NDS EOOD and Mirastar EOOD (source 9).

Licence and register entries

No entity named Nexo appeared in ESMA's interim register of MiCA crypto-asset service providers on 16 September 2026 (source 5). Nexo's MiCA FAQ says that for the EEA it works with two regulated partners: Tangany for custody and DLT Finance as trading counterparty, and that existing clients moved to this setup in phases (source 3). The support site footer names DLT Securities GmbH and Tangany GmbH, both supervised by BaFin (source 4).

The ESMA register lists:

  • Tangany GmbH, authorised by BaFin on 8 August 2025 for custody and administration and for transfer services, passported to 30 EEA states including Bulgaria.
  • DLT Securities GmbH, authorised by BaFin on 18 December 2025 for exchange of crypto-assets for funds and for other crypto-assets, order execution, placing, reception and transmission of orders, advice and portfolio management, with only Germany in the cross-border field (source 5).

How buying and selling works

Eligible EEA clients buy crypto-assets by sending a bank transfer to a dedicated Nexo bank account or by paying with a debit or credit card (source 1). Bank transfers are accepted in USD, EUR and GBP over SWIFT, SEPA, Faster Payments and Fedwire (source 2). Sales and withdrawals go to the client's personal bank account (source 2). Minimum amounts are set on the platform and not published as figures (source 1).

Fees as published

The MiCA fee schedule does not publish percentages for bank-transfer purchases, card purchases, exchange or bank withdrawals: in each case the fee is shown on the platform before you confirm (source 2). Clients in the Platinum tier get one free withdrawal a month, crypto or bank.

Card fees are published: no monthly, annual or inactivity fee; an FX fee of 0.2% in the EEA, UK and Switzerland, 0.7% at weekends; free ATM withdrawals of EUR 200 to EUR 2,000 a month depending on tier, then 2% with a minimum of EUR 1.99 (source 2). The schedule also lists withdrawal fees for USDC, USDT and DAI on various networks.

Custody

Nexo is custodial. In the EEA, Tangany GmbH acts as custody partner (source 3). You do not hold private keys; you rely on Nexo and its partners to safeguard and return assets. Withdrawing to a wallet you control is the alternative; see our guide to self-custody wallets.

Support

Nexo says its client care team is online 24/7. The contact page offers a ticket form and a link to a complaint form (source 4). The website has no Bulgarian version, and the EEA terms say the English version prevails (source 1).

Public issues

SEC settlement, 2023. On 19 January 2023 the US SEC announced that Nexo Capital Inc. agreed to pay USD 45 million in total, USD 22.5 million to the SEC and USD 22.5 million to state regulators, over the unregistered offer and sale of its Earn Interest Product. Nexo did not admit or deny the findings (source 7). Reuters notes that Nexo phased out its US products in 2023 (source 8).

Bulgarian investigation, 2023. According to Reuters, Bulgarian prosecutors launched an investigation into Nexo AG in January 2023, raided offices in Sofia and charged its founders with offences that included participating in an organised crime group to launder money and commit tax and computer fraud. Nexo denied wrongdoing. In December 2023 prosecutors dropped the case, saying there was no evidence of criminal activity and that there was no legal framework for crypto-asset services in Bulgaria (source 8).

Arbitration against Bulgaria, 2024 to date. Nexo AG filed a request for arbitration at the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. ICSID registered the case on 18 January 2024 as Case No. ARB/24/2 under the Bulgaria-Switzerland bilateral investment treaty (source 9). Reuters reported damages sought of USD 3 billion, which Reuters could not verify, and quoted Bulgaria's finance ministry saying that acknowledging the request was not an admission on the substance (source 8). Nexo announced the claim on its blog (source 10). The case record shows Procedural Order No. 1 dated 22 August 2025; no award had been published by 16 September 2026 (source 9).

Ratings

Trustpilot showed an average of 4.4 from about 18,700 reviews on 16 September 2026, on a profile claimed by the company (source 11).

Who Nexo suits

Nexo fits residents of eligible EEA and other listed countries who want a custodial account for several crypto-assets together with a working card, and who are comfortable with fees quoted in the app. It does not fit residents of Bulgaria under the current terms, or anyone who wants to hold their own keys.

Alternatives

For people in Bulgaria, providers that can serve local residents include Bitstamp Europe S.A., licensed in Luxembourg and passported to Bulgaria (our comparison with Bitstamp), and Altcoins.bg, licensed by the Financial Supervision Commission (our comparison with Altcoins.bg). xChange.bg offers EUR and USD accounts in your name with USDC in a self-custody wallet; see our comparison with Nexo.
